Energy Star Day 2017 falls on October 24th, 2017 and is a day to recognize our collective energy efficiency accomplishments. Energy Star asks that we join with millions of others to reduce energy use and achieve climate goals through voluntary action.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the Energy Star program has helped American families and businesses save $430 billion on energy bills since being established in 1992. The EPA goes on to say that the Energy Star program has not only saved Americans money but has also helped achieve broad emissions reductions by:
- Saving 503 billion kilowatt hours of electricity use in 2015 alone
- Preventing 2.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions between 1992 and 2015
Energy Star has done this through its programs focusing on:
- Energy efficient products and appliances
- Energy savings at home
- Energy efficient new homes
- Energy saving strategies for commercial buildings and plants
Commercial buildings and facilities often look to Energy Star for guidance on strategic energy management. Top performing buildings are able to earn the coveted Energy Star from the EPA. The Energy Star has been shown to increase sales prices and rental rates by up to 16 percent according to the Boston Green Ribbon Commission.
